My MD told me that smoking causes calcification of the carotid arteries…?

could someone explain that mechanism for me?

    The chemicals in cigarettes make the walls of your arteries harden. This means they're less elastic when blood is travelling through them, and therefore you get high blood pressure. This is especially dangerous in the carotid artery, because that artery sends blood to your brain.
