When you gums are infected as in th case of gingivitis or the more serious periodontal disease,an inflammatory protein called C reactive protein forms in the bloodstream which can collect on the arterial walls and increase your risk for cardiovascular disease. This is not a primary cause of heart disease, but flossing and brushing correctly and having regular dental cleanings will keep these protein levels low.

Swallowed tooth plaque can get into your bloodstream and clog arteries, or so I've read. I don't know what plaque is made up of, but both are bad news.
